A Brief History

A super-2 expressway bypass was built on the east side of Gettysburg and was opened in 1963. US 15 was moved to the new bypass, and Business US 15 was given to the old US 15 through Gettysburg and south to the Mason-Dixon Line. Business US 15 is known locally as Old Harrisburg Road (north of Gettysburg), Harrisburg Road (north Gettysburg), Carlisle Street (central Gettysburg), Steinwehr Avenue (south Gettysburg), and Emmitsburg Road (south of Gettysburg). The SR designation is SR 3001 except for duplexes with PA 394 and PA 116.

Southern End · US 15, Pennsylvania/Maryland State Line

Timothy Reichard 6/8/03

South of the southernmost US 15 interchange in Pennsylvania, one last sign for Business US 15 stands long the route.

Timothy Reichard 6/8/03

Two miles south of the US 15 interchange and a half mile north of the next US 15 junction, Business US 15 meets the state line and ends. The remaining southern portion of the old US 15 alignment is a county road in Maryland.

A Frederick County welcome sign stands at the pavement change. Below that sign is a little white sign that reads SR 3001 END SEG, indicating that the last segment of SR 3001 (Business US 15) ends here.

At the same spot, but looking northward. The state line bisects a passing zone, but Pennsylvania signs a PASS WITH CARE sign anyway.

Just ahead, a small welcome sign appears as the road enters Adams County, Pennsylvania.

Also near the state line is the first northbound reassurance shield.

Aerial photo (Terraserver/USGS, 1999): Business US 15 ends at the state line. The pavement change on the US 15 freeway to the west is more apparent.
