The Northern End of US 522
Past and Present

The northern terminus of US 522 is at US 11/US 15 between Selinsgrove and Hummels Wharf. The terminus is a partial interchange, marking the northern end of the Selinsgrove bypass and the northern entrance to Selinsgrove in Snyder County. Before the Selinsgrove Bypass was built in the mid-1970s, US 522 ended at Market Street (then US 11/US 15) on the north side of Selinsgrove.

This view is from US 11/US 15 southbound. The interchange forces traffic heading northbound on either highway to continue northbound on US 11/US 15. Southbound traffic can choose either US 522 or US 11/US 15, as shown in this photo.

A closeup of the big green signs shows the route numbers a little bit more clearly.

To allow complete access between US 11/US 15 and US 522, traffic can use an All Turns ramp here at the intersection of US 11/US 15 (the main highway in this photo), Ninth Street (off the right side of the photo), and Susquehanna Mall Drive (heads left from the intersection). Traffic can then loop around the Sheetz back to Ninth Street, where taking US 11/US 15 southbound is an option. Heading southbound back to the interchange, traffic can exit on US 11/US 15 southbound or continue straight ahead on US 522, as shown in the first photo.

US 522 used to have a simpler northern terminus at Market Street, Selinsgrove, which used to be US 11/US 15 before the Selinsgrove bypass was completed. US 11/US 15 was rerouted along that bypass, and US 522 was extended northward along old US 11/US 15 for a mile to its current northern terminus south of Hummels Wharf. In this photo,a left turn allows you to continue on US 522 northbound. To the right is Market Street, leading to Selinsgrove.

This photo shows the intersection as viewed from Market Street southbound. US 522 northbound meets the intersection from the right. One might expect that US 522 southbound approaches the intersection and turns right to proceed, but this is not the case.

US 522 southbound traffic gets to bypass the intersection with a ramp.

Traffic that continues southbound on Market Street instead of continuing southbound on US 522 sees the first US 11/US 15 trailblazers in Selinsgrove. The rectangular sign to the right of the speed limit sign demarcates the edge of the Selinsgrove borough, just a tenth of a mile from the Market St/US 522 intersection.
