The US 11/US 15 Susquehanna Trail
Jughandle Intersections at 104  34

US 11/US 15 was widened to a concrete, four-lane highway from north of PA 104 to south of PA 34. To make most of this highway a divided highway with controlled access, the termini of PA 104, PA 17, PA 34, and other side roads were transformed into jughandle intersections to allow effective U-turns on the highway. This page shows some details of the jughandles at PA 104 and PA 34.

104

With the widening of US 11/US 15, PA 104's south end was turned into a jughandle intersection.

The southern terminus of PA 104 is at US 11/US 15 north of Liverpool. No END sign was present in October 2001, though like PA 17 and PA 34, it may have been removed during the US 11/US 15 upgrade. That upgrade was nearly complete when this photo was taken. The new southbound lanes of US 11/US 15 had not yet been opened, so PA 104 traffic stops on the southbound lanes while two-way US 11/US 15 traffic uses the new northbound lanes.

Later in October 2001, after the US 11/US 15 widening was completed and the southbound US 11/US 15 lanes were opened, the PA 104 shield shown in the October photograph was removed from this sign assembly and placed elsewhere in the jug handle intersection.

An END PA 104 shield was placed along with the JCT US 11/US 15 shields. You can make out the edge of the new pavement as the road curves to the left. The barrier separating the northbound and southbound US 11/US 15 lanes is visible. The jughandle intersection was constucted along with the US 11/US 15 widening. A park-and-ride lot was built to the right of PA 104 just short of the final intersection with US 11/US 15.

The jughandle intersection is more easily seen after proceeding forward. PA 104 continues toward the stop ahead sign toward the right in the photo and curves left to meet US 11/US 15. The road meeting PA 104 in the center of the photograph allows All Turns access. If you follow this access road to the right, a ramp splits off to the left. When US 11/US 15 was widened, cross traffic was limited to a handful of intersections where northbound traffic can head back southbound (or vice versa) to a destination to which they did not have access.

The camera is now past the stop ahead sign. PA 104 is the road at the bottom and meets US 11/US 15 just off the right side of the photo. The All Turns access road is barely visible, stretching horizontally across the center of the photo to the stop sign in the center. Northbound US 11/US 15 traffic wanting to head southbound turns onto PA 104, heading left across the photo to the access road and back to US 11/US 15 at the stop sign in the center. Southbound US 11/US 15 traffic wanting to head northbound turns onto a ramp to the access road, then onto this last segment of PA 104 to meet US 11/US 15, and finally turns left to head northbound.

34

US 11/US 15 meets PA 34 at another new jughandle intersection.

The northern terminus of PA 34 is at US 11/US 15 south of Liverpool. No END sign was present, though like PA 104 and PA 17, it may have been removed during the US 11/US 15 upgrade. That upgrade was nearly complete when this photo was taken. The new southbound lanes of US 11/US 15 had not yet been opened, so PA 34 traffic stops on the southbound lanes while two-way US 11/US 15 traffic uses the new northbound lanes.

Here is a drearier shot of the northern terminus once the US 11/US 15 southbound lanes were opened.

After backing up around the last curve in the road, the new END signage can be seen. The installation was late October 2001.

Like the new PA 104 terminus along the newly widened US 11/US 15 highway, PA 34 also ends at a jug handle intersection. The road toward the bottom of the photo is PA 34. PA 34 ends at US 11/US 15 to the left and heads southward to the right. Behind the camera is an access road. Access control here works in the same manner as that for the jug handle at the southern terminus of PA 104.
