The US 11/US 15 Susquehanna Trail
Duncannon Bypass

US 11/US 15 bypasses the town of Duncannon on the west shore of the Susquehanna River. PA 274 and PA 849 also served the town from the west. Now PA 849 passes by the bypass on an overpass, while PA 274 ends at an interchange in town. North of town, the US 22/US 322 ends as US 11/US 15's freeway bypass begins.

Southbound on US 11/US 15 nearing the US 22/US 322 interchange. US 22/US 322 is mainly a freeway to Harrisburg, so traffic to Harrisburg and I-81 are encouraged to take it. US 11/US 15 also becomes a freeway, but the freeway only bypasses Duncannon. US 11/US 15 is then downgraded to a windy, two-lane road through towns to the Harrisburg area.

Guide sign for the US 22/US 322 interchange, which is the only place where US 11/US 15 dips into Dauphin County. Dauphin County is on the east side of the Susquehanna River except in the area of this interchange, which is on Duncan Island, a peninsula off the west shore.

One characteristic of the Duncannon bypass is that interchanges with numbered routes are given doubly: on overhead guide signs and with roadside route markers. This is the exit to US 22/US 322 westbound. The overpass ahead is one of two ramps from US 22/US 322 westbound to US 11/US 15 northbound, i.e., the second-chance exit. Here we are still in Perry County. The county line is near the overpass.

The eastbound exit has the smaller, standard-sized shields for US 22/US 322. Welcome to Dauphin County.

Dauphin County does not last long here. After crossing the Juniata River, US 11/US 15 passes back into Perry County.

A shot of the narrow northern part of the Duncannon bypass. Around the bend, the freeway widens to accomodate a grass median.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02

Just past the PA 849 overpass, motorists are urged to stay off the grass median. Duncannon is off to the left.

The Duncannon exit is also PA 274's west end, complete with two end signs.

At the PA 274 interchange, the freeway narrows to one lane southbound as the onramp from PA 274 joins. The freeway is about to end.

At the south end of the Duncannon bypass, US 11/US 15 narrows to a windy, two-lane road all the way to I-81. The cautionary sign reads: CONGESTED AREA / HEADLIGHTS ON FOR SAFETY / MAINTAIN SAFE DISTANCE. After many miles of the narrow road, US 11/US 15 will reach I-81 and Camp Hill.
