US 322 and PA 53 join for about 1 mi in Philipsburg in Clearfield and Centre Counties.
US 322 and PA 53 join here, just north of Philipsburg.
Just ahead, US 322 approaches this intersection from the left and right, and PA 53 joins US 322 to the left.
Here is the view of the two routes splitting. PA 53 heads north to an interchange with I-80, while US 322 parallels I-80 past several interchanges, meeting I-80 well past Clearfield and Brookville, 63 miles west of the PA 53 interchange.
The southern splits of US 322/PA 53 is in the heart of Philipsburg, where PA 53 splits onto two streets. It so happens that on July 14, 2002, when this photo was taken, the one-way street for PA 53 southbound was closed for a town festival. PA 53 southbound normally continues straight ahead here while US 322 splits to the left.
Following US 322, the lone designation turns right, paralleling PA 53 southbound two blocks away. US 322 then meets PA 53 northbound and PA 350 here at the town square. PA 350 begins straight ahead and heads to the northern terminus of I-99. US 322 followed that route long ago, but now heads to the left to meet PA 504.
Facing in the opposite direction, PA 350 ends here at US 322/PA 53: US 322 from the right, PA 53 from the left, and both continuing straight ahead. PA 53 southbound splits from US 322 a few blocks straight ahead and parallels US 322 two blocks to the left, normally never reaching this intersection. The TO NORTH 53 sign in the photo should lack the TO sign, whereas TO is correctly posted above the SOUTH PA 53 sign.
PennDOT's 2001 Centre County map shows PA 504 duplexed with US 322 from the east (right) and also ending at this intersection. The actual signs do not concur: from here to the signed PA 504 terminus a mile to the east, TO PA 504 signs appear along with the EAST US 322 signs.
Here is a closer view of the shields on the left.
Two blocks to the west, PA 53 splits onto two streets here. PA 53 northbound turns right here to meet US 322 and PA 350.
Here is another view of the PA 53 split. PA 53 southbound runs right to left, and PA 53 northbound runs from the left to behind the camera.
Having made the turn, PA 53 first meets PA 350, which like US 322, is split around the town square.
On the other side of the town square, PA 53 meets US 322.
This photo shows the same intersection as the previous photo, with PA 350 ending as it approaches from the left. US 322/PA 53 combine and head to the right. PA 350 is well signed with I-99 trailblazers here, 14 miles from current I-99's northern terminus.
The camera did not change location from the previous shot to take his shot, but merely turned to the right. The pair of shields on the right side are the ones visible in the second photo before this one, below the overhead right turn ONLY sign. Not often are signs duplicated on both sides of a narrow street.
