PA 61 and PA 147 join for a mile-long wrong-way duplex in Sunbury in Northumberland County.
PA 61 southbound (looking east) on the Veteran's Memorial Bridge, crossing the Susquehanna River to the south end of Sunbury.
The east end of the bridge is an interchange with PA 147, which is Front St. in Sunbury. The smaller green sign in the background points left to Front Street (PA 61/PA 147) and right to Second Street (PA 147 southbound).
Taking the Sunbury exit, PA 147 merges with the PA 61 ramp to become the wrong-way duplex on Front Street.
Facing in the opposite direction, PA 61 splits from PA 147/Front Street here to loop around to the Veteran's Memorial Bridge. On the west side of the bridge, PA 61 ends at another interchange with US 11/US 15.
PennDOT is planning a US 15/PA 147 expressway bypass of Shamokin Dam and Hummels Wharf to take traffic off of current US 11/US 15. When complete (2008?), PA 61 will be terminated right here. PA 147 will cross the Susquehanna River near Winfield and return across this bridge (replacing PA 61) to the interchange, and then PA 147 will resume its current route southward (straight ahead in this photo). Current PA 147 along PA 61 in Sunbury will not be replaced, and so the PA 61/PA 147 duplex will be PA 61 only.
A closer view of the PA 61 ramp to the bridge. PA 147 southbound is the lane at the lower right.
Just south of the PA 61 & PA 147 interchange, PA 147's northbound and southbound lanes split apart. PA 147 southbound is Front Street, as seen in the previous photos. PA 147 northbound follows Second Street until it reaches the interchange, which is off to the left. Technically, PA 61 does not follow PA 147 here, but since PA 61 is quite close, both are signed here.
PA 147 makes a left turn and follows a lane that merges with the PA 61 ramp to become Front Street and PA 61/PA 147. The Herndon exit in the first photo meets this intersection as well from the left.
About a mile to the north on Front Street/PA 61/PA 147, the southbound Truck PA 61 begins. The northern split of PA 61/PA 147 is just a block ahead. The reassurance shield for PA 147 in this photo might have a PA 61 reassurance shield to go with it if the split were not just ahead.
PA 61 splits off of PA 147 onto Market Street at the northern split.
PA 61 northbound on Market Street. PA 61 joins PA 147 at the intersection ahead.
Signs at the end of Market Street, which may have been the previous northern end of PA 61 before the Veteran's Memorial Bridge was completed in the late 1980s.
A close-up view of the little white signs show an END SEG marker for SR 61 (lower sign). Just above it, SR 147 extends both left and right. The SR convention for state route duplexes is to use the lower route number (61 in this case) as the SR number, so SR 147 should extend only to the right with SR 61 taking over to the left. PA 147 joins US 11 for another wrong-way duplex in Northumberland.
The northern split as seen from PA 147 southbound. Truck South PA 61 begins a block ahead. If PA 61 used to end here, then Truck South PA 61 would have begun here, briefly duplexed with PA 147.
Nonetheless, right now, this block is PA 61/PA 147.
Truck South PA 61 begins on Chestnut Street a block to the south.
